105th Birthday celebrations

On 9th September Hoar Cross will celebrate another ‘first’ when resident Muriel Alderman celebrates her 105th birthday.

Muriel lived in her own home in Barton under Needwood until she came to live at Hoar Cross in 2007.

She was the youngest of 11 children and always speaks of how wonderful her Mother was. In later life it was her ambition to live to be 100 years old like her mother.

As a girl Muriel wanted to be a secretary to a handsome boss – an ambition she never achieved! A senior at her school suggested she became a teacher and she found her calling. She thoroughly enjoyed her teaching career, often talking about her pupils and the importance of reading and writing.

Muriel married her husband, Dennis on Easter Monday 1940, having made her own wedding dress. She is immensely proud of her 3 sons, 6 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

In past years Muriel’s birthdays have been family affairs marking a very real achievement. This year due to Coronavirus it will be her family of staff and residents at Hoar Cross who will celebrate a very special and much loved lady.
